Brokedown Radio is back and, in episode 3, your host, J.M. Hart, delivers a plethora of jammy, psychedelic, folksy, country, and otherized roots music for a most hedonistic aural experience.
If your sound world traverses the folkadelic kook of early Marc Bolan, stopping off at Phil Lesh & Friends in a quick search for the sound, before heading over to Johnny Cash to experience what it’s like to hear a Bob Dylan cover as if it were the original… Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are some of our highlights from this episode.
Episode Highlights
Jeffrey Alexander & The Heavy Lidders – “Spacious Minds“
The title track of this 2023 cassette release, by NQRA’s own Jeffrey Alexander, is an exploration of just what you can do within the space of one chord. Ecstatic drone ain’t a new idea, but it sure has endless potential for lift-off and that’s exactly what occurs here. The cassette also includes a version of the Dead’s “Dark Star” so ya know… That’s the zone you’re in, here.
Mike Gangloff – “Ironto Dancer“
Gangloff is a prolific psychedelic folkie best-known as a member of the wonderful Black Twig Pickers, but this track is taken from his 2025 solo record April Is Passing on the great VHF label. It’s a haunting fiddle piece that’s as in-your-face as it is ethereal and, shucks, if it ain’t some of the best music of this ilk this century.
Wednesday Knudsen “Fair Aegis”
A longtime fixture of the Western Mass underground, Knudsen is known as a member of the great Pigeons duo with Clark Griffin. “Fair Aegis” is taken from her wonderful solo record Atrium, which came out as a split release between Feeding Tube Records and Spinster Sounds in 2025.
Paul Metzger “The Uses of Infinity (pt 2)”
Metzger first came to the attention of underground heads in the late ’80s as a member of experimental rock trio TVBC, but over the past three decades, he’s carved out a more singular path as a solo artist with a particularly unique approach to the banjo—straddling traditionalism and experimentation. The Uses of Infinity is a 2010 cycle of six pieces and “(pt 2)” is, of course, one of ’em. Wondrous stuff.
