This inaugural episode—which is all desert related jammers—is straight fire, too, with plenty of tunes you’ll know and love, but a ton of deep cuts to keep you waiting for the talk breaks.
Episode Highlights
Rainer & Das Combo – “One Man Crusade”
Taken from 1993’s amazing The Texas Tapes, this is arguably the best tune ever recorded by Rainer Ptacek and his backing band, Das Combo, with a David Lynch-esque sense of drama and badassness. Haunting midi keys, synth bass, and slide guitar—three instruments you were today years old when you learned they are perfect together.
Thin White Rope – “Down In The Desert”
From the 1985 debut LP, Exploring the Axis, by the desert rocking paisley underground Californians, “Down In The Desert” is a gnarly 50/50-shuffle-march mystery exploring the terrifying psychedelic wonder of being out there in the arid dunes. The bass pops almost like a Minutemen cut while distorted guitars ring out and Guy Kyser’s voice is almost questioning in its snarl.
Abecedarians – “Wild Flowers Grow From The Trash”
Killer 1988 cut from LA post-punk trio that’s as much indebted to Joy Division vocally as it is to Mission of Burma instrumentally. They were signed to Factory for a minute when their first record landed, which makes a lot of sense, but this track is from their fantastic third album, Resin. A truly lost classic.
Varnaline — “Now You’re Dirt”
1998 kinda sucked if you were an underground rocker with songs that would have blown up the 1994 mainstream. Varnaline’s Anders Parker is a case in point, and this tune, taken from the band’s wonderful fourth album, Sweet Life, is exemplary of just why he should be way better known than he is. Dig it.
